Treating Acne at Home
Tips for Treating Acne
- Don’t pick! It’s tempting, but it can actually spread bacteria and make matters worse.
- Check your cosmetics. Often times, there are ingredients that can cause a lot of problems for oily skin. Look for Isopropyl Mysirtate, S.D. Alcohol, Mineral Oil, and Fragrance (just to name a few). Waterproof and smudge proof products are typically not recommended for acne.
- Check your hair care products. Especially if you experience breakouts around the forehead and hairline. Really be on the lookout for PVP, CVP and copolymer ingredients.
- Don’t get stressed! This can increase oil production. Try taking a walk or a few deep breaths if you start feeling overwhelmed
- Be aware of the cleanliness of items that touch the face. For example, dirty phones are a common culprit of breakouts. Also check caps, and try not to let clothing rub the skin.
- Check your environment. Hot and humid atmospheres can increase acne.
- Eat well! Aside from feeling better, this can help decrease effects of acne.
- Look at family history. Acne is often times hereditary.
Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to change it, but you CAN help to topically control your symptoms with proper care and hygiene.
