How to Care for Skin on the Body
Proper body care can give your gorgeous, healthy skin for a lifetime! Whether you have dry winter skin or just want to show off a summer
glow, use these tips to achieve spa-like results:
Shower with warm water...not hot
Hot water draws moisture out of the skin and can make you look dry and flakey.
Use body wash...NOT soap
Soap's pH is alkaline, but our skin's pH is acidic. That means soap will throw skin out of it's 'comfort zone', which can make it feel tight, dry and itchy. Soap is also prone to collect bacteria since it sits in a dark, damp shower all day. Body wash is more moisturizing. Try Dermalogica's Conditioning Body Wash, and apply with the loofah-like Ultimate Buffing Cloth (it has exfoliating properties and can be washed in your washing machine!).
Exfoliate in the shower
A gentle scrub will help slough off dead skin cells...when these cells don't get exfoliated off, our skin can look dull and dehydrated. This can also help unclog pores, which will help if you are prone to breakouts on the body! Try Exfoliating Body Scrub...it has enzymes and Rice Bran to brighten skin tone, essential oils to awaken the senses, and tiny scrubbing particles to remove dead skin cells. You can also make your own...mix 1/2 cup grapeseed oil, 1 cup sea salt, and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil.
Apply body lotion as soon as you get out of the shower
This helps lock in moisture, giving you smoother skin for a longer time.
A rich, creamy lotion is great for winter weather and skin that is prone to dryness. A lighter lotion with hydroxy acids is great for oilier skin, or skin that is prone to tiny, white bumps (AKA keratosis pilaris). The hydroxy acids help clear out the pores and smooth skin. Avoid body lotions with mineral oil, fragrance, color and SD Alcohol...these can all dry you out and cause breakouts.
Treat yourself to a detoxifying bath
An occassional detox-bath can really rejuvenate your skin and mind. Even if it's just on Sundays, a bath makes your skin so soft you'll feel like you just left the spa. Turn down the lights, play some classical music, light a candle, and use warm water. Detoxifying bath salts can be poured in a bath for an ultimate soak, and even gently scrubbed over the skin for exfoliating action. A bath oil provides a deep bath therapy and can be used for massage (body and scalp) as well!
