Treatment for Keratosis Pilaris
What is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis Pilaris is a common skin condition that appears on the skin as tiny, rough bumps. Many people say it resembles goose bumps or chicken skin.
It is commonly found on the upper arms and thighs, but can also affect the cheeks, back and buttocks.
What causes Keratosis Pilaris?
Our bodies produce keratin naturally. Keratin is the protein that makes up our skin and hair. Sometimes our bodies overproduce keratin, which causes it to get trapped in the pores. The pore then hardens and forms a plug, causes bumps.
It is often times a genetic condition.
KP tends to be more common in women, and can be especially exaggerated during puberty. Some people find that it fluctuates seasonally (ie: it may be better in summer, yet flare-up in winter).
How can I reduce Keratosis Pilaris conditions?
While it not a medical concern, people with these frustrating bumps still want them gone! There is no one-fix solution, but there are a few tips you can follow on a regular basis to help reduce their appearance:
- Get a microdermabrasion
The exfoliating action will help to clear the pores and give skin a more even texture. - Use a Vitamin A product
Retinoids are known for increasing the rate at which skin cells turnover. This helps keep pores clean and free of the debris that could otherwise build up. Be sure to wear SPF on exposed areas where Vitamin A is used...it makes skin susceptible to sun damage! - Exfoliate with Lactic Acid
Lactic Acid has great exfoliating properties (which helps prevent build-up), but it is also very hydrating! Try Dermalogica Body Hydrating Cream to reduce bumps...it has a high % of Lactic Acid to keep skin super-smooth. People tend to favor Lactic Acid treatment over Vitamin A, simply because it is more gentle on the skin and not as likely to cause hyperpigmentation.
