School, sports, socializing…there is no doubt that teenagers lead an active lifestyle. Factor in hormones, and you have a breeding ground for a variety of skin issues! Many of these problems can often be solved with proper hygiene and a good skin care routine.

The teen years are actually the ideal time to start thinking about your future skin. A good routine should focus on cleansing, exfoliating, treating current conditions (ie: breakouts), and moisturizing. Sun protection should be a priority. Most of the sun damage we see in our older years (ie: sun spots, wrinkles, sagging) is the result of sun damage we got at a younger age. Protect your skin now, and reap the benefits later!

Check out these tips and common culprits for skin issues…sometimes just a simple change in routine can make a big difference.

Do's

Do remove eye make-up every night

Sleeping in make-up clogs the pores, which makes you susceptible to breakouts. PreCleanse is a quick and effective product for make-up removal...follow with a cleanser.

Do use non-comedogenic products

"Non-comedogenic" just means it won't clog your pores. Avoid using products with Mineral Oil, Lanolin, Isopropyl Myristate, SD Alcohol, Color and/or Fragrance...they are known to clog pores or cause skin allergies.

Do wash your hands before cleansing (or touching your face, period)

Dirty hands should never touch your face! Think about everything you touch during the course of a day...exposing your skin to germs and debris can cause breakouts, irritation, etc.

Do check the cleanliness of anything touching your face

Hats, phones, shirt collars, etc. should be cleaned on a regular basis...they collect dirt, which clogs pores. If you tend to breakout along the chine line or hair line, that could be why!

Do shower after working up a sweat

Showering is crucial after working out because it removes sweat and impurities that can clog pores and cause breakouts. This is a common cause of back and chest acne. If you don't get the chance to immediately hop in the shower, try keeping Skin Purifying Wipes in your gym bag or locker. They have Salicylic Acid to clear follicles, and keep you clean in the meantime!

Do eat healthy

Researchers believe there is a correlation between your diet and skin

Do wear an SPF daily

This is soooo extremely important! You don’t worry much about it when you are younger, but this is THE ideal time to start preventing future problems of sun damage, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. We get most of our sun damage at a young age, but it doesn’t start to show on the skin until years later! The most common regret we hear from older clients is wishing they took better care of their skin at a younger age. TRUST US…prevention is much easier than correction.

Don'ts

Don't take really hot showers

This can dehydrate the skin, which in turn can cause skin to over-produce oil or look topically dry.

Don't use bar soap on the face

ESPECIALLY if it’s the same soap you use on the body! Soap has a very high pH, which can throw your skin out of its natural state. Not to mention, it sits in a dark, damp shower all day…which makes it a breeding ground for bacteria. Dermalogica cleansers are pH balanced to the skin. If you insist on using a bar, try The Clean Bar…it is hydrating, acid-balanced and exfoliating!

Don't use too many "drying" products

Teens with oily skin often make the mistake of using products that claim to “dry up oil” at every step of their routine. When your pores get too dry, your brain sends signals to sebaceous glands to correct the problem by producing more oil. Instead, use special “drying” products only on days when skin is really misbehaving.

Don't pick at breakouts

It’s hard to resist, but it can actually spread bacteria and cause more breakouts. Try hiding pimples with Concealing Spot Treatment…it contains Sulfur and Zinc Oxide to help heal, and contains a natural tint to conceal.

What's Dermalogica's solution for teens?

Clean Start is a new brand for teens created by the skin health experts at Dermalogica! It the simple answer to your skin concerns. So many product lines out there tend to use harsh ingredients to strip the skin of it's natural oil. While super-drying products may provide immediate results, they strip the skin of it's natural protective layer. This actually damages your skin and causes it to produce more oil in the long run!

Clean Start is designed to keelp your skin clear and healthy...all within a budget you can afford. Nice.
